6 Simple Rules for Pristine Pearls

Pearls are very durable, however proper care will maintain luster and appearance. Remember these simple care rules to keep your jewelry looking pristine.

1. Remember the Last on… First off rule. Put your pearls on after you apply lotion, hairspray, perfume, and make-up. Chemical products will damage the layer of nacre, resulting in dulling of the surface

2. Pearls should be kept in a separate compartment from other jewelry to avoid being scratched by gold, diamonds or other metals and hard gemstones. Consider wrapping your pearls in soft linen, or a mesh pouch.

3. To clean your pearls, gently wipe them with a warm, damp cloth before putting them away to remove body oils or dirt. This prevents dulling and discoloration. Never steam them or put in an ultra-sonic cleaner.

4. Never wear pearls while bathing, showering, and swimming. Also, avoid perspiration by removing your pearls before exercising. Be very careful with harmful abrasive substances, such as household cleaners, as they will eat holes in the pearl nacre.

5. Pearls should be re-strung once a year if worn frequently (more than 3 times a week) and every 3-5 years if worn less often. Have each pearl knotted separately and try to use silk, so they won’t wear the nacre off each other. If re-stringing very small pearls, you may choose not to knot each one.
